Battlelight’s May 31st win in the 2nd race at Hipodromo V Centenario was not her biggest. It was not stakes race, or even an upper level allowance. Despite the apparent insignificance of the race, for me it was one to remember with immense satisfaction.

Despite her modest purchase price at OBS and her apparent turf pedigree, Battlelight(USA), by the champion son of Danehill North Light(IRE) out of the War Deputy mare Battle Shout, proved to be a consistent runner, was stakes-placed and was the 2nd Highweighted Filly of her generation. She would have had her share of stakes wins if had not been of the same generation of formidable champion Grand Perfect, whom she defeated on one occasion.

At 3, Battlelight fractured her basilar sesamoid bone and we decided to send her to the breeding shed. Unfortunately, she failed to ovulate and when we reassessed her status we discovered that her fracture had healed.

After more than 18 months away from the track is was natural that she lacked confidence, but last Saturday, May 31st, 23 months after her last victory, our perseverance and her class prevailed, giving us one of the sweetest victories ever. The game mare overcame adversity in the stretch, and battled her way to victory with an excellent ride by Odalis Severino. She is trained by Juan Jimenez and Eugenio Deschamps.
